Our Story

The Limited® was founded in 1963 in Columbus, Ohio by Les Wexner. The first store was opened as a women’s clothing boutique with a focus on affordable and versatile workwear staples. Wexner had a vision to provide sophisticated career women access to elegant yet practical clothing.

The brand quickly took off, resonating with professional women across America seeking both style and value. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, The Limited® pioneered vertically integrated specialty retailing, controlling every element of the process from design and production to marketing and retail sales.

By 1976, there were 100 Limited stores nationwide. The next year, Wexner launched Express as a test store appealing to a younger demographic. The experiment was a phenomenal success, leading to the launch of Express as its own brand and retail chain.

In 1980, the parent company officially changed its name to The Limited, Inc. to reflect its growing family of brands. Over the next decades, The Limited, Inc. would acquire or launch iconic retailers including Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, Henri Bendel, Abercrombie & Fitch, Structure, Aerosoles, Lerner New York, Lane Bryant and more.
